Biography
Chris Spearman is a proven leader and dedicated community member that is ready to bring the voice of Lethbridge to Ottawa and fight every day for an even stronger Canada.
Chris was first elected as Mayor of the City of Lethbridge in October 2013, where he served two terms. Prior to serving as Mayor, he gained 38 years of business management experience in the private sector. He was a founding member of the Industrial Association of Southern Alberta.
Chris devoted 18 years to serving on the Holy Spirit School Board which included two terms as Board Chair, and as a founding member of Economic Development Lethbridge. He also served the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, the University of Lethbridge Faculty of Management Advisory Committee, the Aboriginal Housing Society and the Rehabilitation Society of Southwestern Alberta (now Ability Resource Centre).
Under his tenure as Mayor, the City of Lethbridge achieved several remarkable accomplishments, the highlights which include:
- Attraction of new investments/construction projects exceeding $1 billion for the first time in city history
- Maintaining the 2019 municipal tax increase as the lowest in 20 years followed by three years of 0% tax increases
- Establishment of the Reconciliation Lethbridge Advisory Committee. In 2019, under Chris’s leadership, Lethbridge City Council adopted the Blackfoor word, “Oki” meaning “welcome” as the official greeting for the City of Lethbridge.
- Chris was given the Blackfoot name, Nitsikimmapiiyipitsi, (man with a heart) and a personalized Blackfoot blanket for his efforts to improve relationships with the Blackfoot people of southwestern Alberta.
- In September 2022, Chris was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun – Gold and Silver Rays – conferred by the Government of Japan and approved by the Emperor of Japan for significant efforts to enhance relationships between the Canadian and Japanese people.
Chris is the father of four and proud grandfather of six grandchildren. His leisure activities include skiing, hiking and biking. He enjoys international travel and appreciates cultural diversity.
